Master Mason Examinations

Navigating the Florida Masonic Digest

The Master Mason Examinations are practical, open-book exams designed to teach Brothers how to find and apply Masonic law using the Florida Masonic Digest. They focus on familiarity, accuracy, and confidence when navigating the rules governing Lodge operations and officers’ decisions.

Completion of all three Master Mason Examinations is required for Brothers who wish to serve in elected Lodge offices.

The Master Mason Examinations are designed to help Brothers learn how to navigate and properly use the Florida Masonic Digest. They are not memory tests, and they are not meant to be academic exercises.

Their purpose is practical: to ensure that Brothers, especially those preparing for elected office, know where to find the rules and laws that govern the operation of a Lodge

What the Exams Are

The Master Mason Examinations are a series of open-book, multiple-choice exams based entirely on the Florida Masonic Digest.

They are intended primarily for:

  • Brothers serving, or preparing to serve, in elected chairs

  • Brothers who want a working understanding of Masonic law and procedure

  • Future Lodge leaders who will be required to make informed decisions

The exams are not designed to test memorization. They are designed to build familiarity and confidence in using the Digest as a reference

Why the Exams Matter

Every Worshipful Master, Senior Warden, and Junior Warden is required to make decisions that affect the Lodge. Those decisions are governed by Masonic law, not personal opinion or local custom.

The Master Mason Examinations prepare Brothers to:

  • Know where to look when questions arise

  • Interpret Digest language accurately

  • Make decisions rooted in established law and procedure

  • Lead with confidence rather than guesswork

The exams intentionally remain open-book because the goal is navigation, not recall.

Exam Structure

There are three Master Mason Examinations, each focusing on different sections of the Digest. Questions commonly cover topics such as:

  • Lodge management and administration

  • Duties and responsibilities of officers

  • Petitions, degrees, and balloting procedures

  • Finances, dues, and Lodge funds

  • Masonic discipline and process

Each question references the specific section of the Digest where the answer can be found. This is intentional and serves as a built-in guide.

How the Exams Are Taken

The exams may be completed:

  • Digitally, using fillable PDFs

  • Or in printed form, then scanned for submission

Brothers are encouraged to use the digital Digest, but many also find value in working from a printed copy, or at least the printed index.

Marking sections, using tabs, and taking notes are encouraged. The Digest is meant to be a working tool, not a shelf book.

Grading & Oversight

Master Mason Examinations are graded by the District Chairman of Masonic Education, in accordance with guidance from the Grand Lodge of Florida.

Once completed and approved, results are recorded as part of a Brother’s Masonic education record. Completion of the exams is one of the Grand Lodge requirements for Brothers seeking to advance into Lodge leadership.
