Masonic Leadership Training

Structured Instruction for Lodge Officers & Future Leaders

Masonic Leadership Training (MLT) is a formal education program developed by the Grand Lodge of Florida to prepare Brothers for the responsibilities of Lodge leadership. It focuses on the practical operation of a Lodge, officer duties, and the effective management of Lodge business.

MLT is required for Brothers seeking to serve in elected Lodge positions.

MLT is a group-based, seminar-style instructional program, not an individual or self-paced course. Instruction is presented by the District MLT Chairman through live presentations and discussion, typically supported by slide-based materials.

The courses are designed to:

  • Prepare Brothers for elected and appointed officer roles

  • Clarify the duties and responsibilities of each office

  • Provide practical guidance on managing Lodge operations

  • Establish consistency in leadership practices across Lodges

Successful completion of all required modules results in the issuance of an MLT Certificate.

Course Content

MLT consists of 15 instructional modules, covering topics such as:

  • Duties and responsibilities of Lodge officers

  • Planning and managing the Lodge year

  • Conducting meetings and Lodge business

  • Committees, communications, and membership

  • Budgeting, finance, and Lodge renewal

  • Ritual, service, and event organization

  • Public speaking and leadership communication

The curriculum is intended to give Brothers a functional understanding of how a Lodge operates from both an administrative and managerial perspective.

Who Should Attend

Masonic Leadership Training is designed for Master Masons preparing for Lodge leadership. While open to all, completion of MLT is mandatory for Brothers seeking nomination to elected offices. The program provides practical instruction on officer duties, Lodge operations, and effective leadership.

Relationship to Other Education Programs

Masonic Leadership Training (MLT) is required for Brothers seeking to serve in elected Lodge offices.

MLT works in coordination with other Grand Lodge–supported education programs, including:

  • Master Mason Examinations, which focus on navigating and applying the Florida Masonic Digest

  • Open Books & School of Instruction, which support ritual instruction, proficiency, and floor work

When a Brother completes MLT, Master Mason Examinations (MM I–III), and the optional Lodge Officers Training Course (LOTC), he becomes eligible to receive the Purple Proficiency Card, recognizing completion of the core officer education pathway.

District and Zone Oversight

While District Chairmen are responsible for delivering MLT instruction to Brothers within their districts, Zone Chairmen provide oversight and coordination at a broader level.

Zone Chairmen:

  • Support District Chairmen

  • Ensure consistency across districts

  • Host quarterly online MLT-related sessions, typically conducted via Zoom

These zone-level sessions supplement district instruction and provide additional opportunities for engagement and clarification.
